The Whitchurch – Mityana Link

The Whitchurch – Mityana link began in 1977 when the then Bishop John Taylor met with late Bishop Yokana Mukasa –  the 1st Bishop Of Mityana. Mityana Diocese is one of 29 that form the province of the Anglican Church created in 1977. It has 42 parishes and covers a mainly rural area of the Mubende and Kiboga districts. The cathedral stands on a hill in Namakosi just outside the town of Mityana.

Whitchurch Deanery covers an area as far west at East (!) 25/11/2008Woodhay and Woolton Hill to North Waltham, near Basingstoke, on the east and then up to ‘the Cleres’ (that’s Kings-, Burgh- and High-) in the north and as far south as Longparish. There are 26 churches, eight benefices (groups of parishes).

At present we have linked up the primary school s of Whitchurch, N. Waltham, East Woodhay, Woolton Hill, St Mary Bourne, Ecchinswell & Longparish with primary schools in Mityana. Testbourne has set up a partnership with Mityana Secondary School.

People in the Deanery have raised over £15,000 for our water project and from 2005 - 2007, £14,000+ was raised to support schools, income generating projects, churches and the hospital.

In 2007, along with the Testbourne group, 26 people from all over the Deanery visited Mityana. Here some are at Bulera, which is linked with Woolton Hill. We gave them enough money to repair a classroom and finish work on some new latrines. At present they only have two for 600+ pupils!

On one of several visits to the hospital we went to the ‘Outpatients Clinic. Many of the women had very sick children & would have to wait up to five hours to be seen. Thanks to our local doctor we were able to deliver an X-ray viewing box (no longer used here) as well as other equipment and clothing.

These are some of the 40 girls who graduated in Tailoring & Home Economics and were each given a treadle sewing machine to take back to their villages to help provide them with the means of creating an income. It is one of the projects we support.

The boys each graduated with a box of carpentry tools and the skills to help them begin a career in woodwork. They also learn gardening skills and cookery.

Viv Wheeler (headteacher of North Waltham) visited her link school, Lulagala. They will get a new tank this year, with money raised by the children of N. W. There was much to talk about!
