Project Aims & Objectives

Individual Personal Development

The main objective of the project and trip to Uganda is the individual personal development of the pupils who have been selected for the team.

Specifically it is the intention to:

  • Build a relationship with those we meet in Mityana that will continue after our return,

  • To continue to build a long lasting relationship between Mityana Secondary and Testbourne School.

  • Become familiar with a different culture with a strong oral tradition.

  • Share experiences of school life with young people of a similar age and find common ground,

  • Offer the opportunity to work in the primary school with younger children, helping in lessons

  • Enable our young people to develop their public speaking skills.

  • Learn how to deal with our reactions to issues such as poverty, different food and language barriers,

  • Really enjoy ourselves, to get to know each other as we share this experience and to return positively changed and willing to share what we have learnt with others.

Here are some examples from team members in 2007 when they were asked to write about what they had discovered about themselves:

  • I think I’m stronger on the inside now and I can cope with unfairness

  • You can be happy with very little

  • I take too much for granted

  • I’ve learnt that I don’t smile enough and they told me to look happy

  • I’m quite strong inside and don’t   appreciate what I have

  • That I am a strong person I never thought I’d be able to introduce myself in front of so many people. But I have found I can do it!

  • That we have so much and I should enjoy my life while I have it.
