Thursday 22nd October
First we headed out to the bush to a school called Bulera. When we arrived
we had a tour of the school and saw the plants they grow there and the pigs.
Then we went inside for the welcoming, they sang beautiful songs, did
wonderful dancing, played amazing instruments, and gave fabulous gifts. Then
we all introduced ourselves and gave our gifts. After that we all did
different activities such as painting nails, making masks, painting
blackboards, tattooing, and face painting. Next we went inside for lunch,
after which we went and played tug of war, water races hoola hooping,
musical chairs, and volley ball. Then we all had a very emotional visit to
the hospitals maternity ward and we saw the mothers of the babies and who
have lost theirs all in one room. After which we bought wicker pots.

Wednesday 21st October
Everyone changed their money in Kampala, spent quite a time at the craft
market buying gifts for family and friends. The cathedral service was amazing
with singing and dancing and Dodie asked to preach at what she called the 11th
hour! Then down to the secondary school for a drumming and dancing session -
great fun for all. And most of them phoned home!
Then to the orphanage where we gave the kids lunch - wonderful plates piled high
with food! We had mask making, face painting, bracelet making and bingo. It was
a fantastic day.
In school we have attended history, physics and maths lessons and had a tour and
yesterday carried water back from the water hole. We've been out and about and
the kids have met their buddies and have been with them for 2 days now. Today
they went with us to Afinnet to see the girls who are learning to sew and who
wll be given a treadle machine to take home to their villages. At the same place
we gave all the carpentry tools to the workshop and they have been making
puppets.
We have tried poshu and beans for lunch at school and they have had good meals
at the hotel. All looking a bit weary tonight so they are having a sleep in in
the morning.
Each evening we have been having journal sessions with the adults (28 in total)
Everyone making comments about their day.
Wednesday 21st October
Today was our lie in day. We woke up around nine and had breakfast. Then went
back to bed until 11, which was good. Then we went to Mityana secondary school,
to go to one of their assemblies. They have their assembly outside! They all sit
under trees and by the flowers. They first sing the Uganda anthem then have a
couple of “communications” (notices). We had to introduce ourselves to the
school. We then said goodbye to our buddies, we will see them next on Friday.
After that, we walked up to Afnet to have lunch. It was yummmyyy. Their toilets
are holes in the floor! But at least they have flushes. We then split up into
two groups to go to two similar Primary schools. The one me and Kate went to was
called lulagaula. The others went to Mityana Junior school. We had a tour around
and we saw their water tank and their pig that had had piglets. They were so
cute!! We saw all the classrooms and saw the children doing their usual work and
activities. They made us little brushes! They also sang and danced for us and we
blew bubbles with them. It was really good. We also went to see the clinic. The
others at the Mityana Junior School made bracelets, played games and relay
races, before painting some blackboards.

Tuesday 20th October
Today we went to the secondary school and had two lessons, geography and
history. They were very different to our lessons as our lessons only have 32 in
them and they have 70-150. We then went to AFINET and saw how the young people
who don’t go to school gain skills. They do carpentry and sewing. We were
greeted at lunch by singing and dancing from some of the AFINET pupils and the
bishop. Then the bishop made a speech and there was more singing then he spoke
to Hannah asking her to sing but no she didn’t say yes and asked us to sing with
her she says “oh Jade will” so she dropped me straight in it. So the bishop
asked me to sing and I had to say yes. I managed to get everyone to sing with
me. We sang “if your happy and you know it” and everyone joined in. it was a
very good day.

Monday 19th October
On Monday, we woke up very early, and had breakfast. Then we all squashed into a
tiny minibus, and went down to Mityana Secondary School. It took three trips to
get us and all the adults down there! We met up with our buddies, who took us on
a guided tour of the school, and around their farm, which had lots of fruit and
lots of local cows. Then we went out to a hut at the back of the school. In that
time, we had a set of twenty questions which we asked them and they asked us.
After that the bell went, and everyone rushed down to the canteen, and queued up
to get their poshue, which is a mix of cornflour and water, and served with
beans.
After lunch, some of us went to an RE lesson, in which they learnt about
justice. Exams meant not all classes had teachers. Then the adults arrived, and
we all went down for a Lugandan lesson, in which we learnt 1-10, common phrases,
and a song to help us learn the numbers.
Then we all went down to the water hole, all carrying our jerry cans, which was
very tiring, and not something we would want to do every day.
Then we all came home for a wash and a rest.

Sunday 18th October
Today was an early start as we had to attend a cathedral service. There was lots
of singing and dancing, not like our church services back in England! The
cathedral was packed, and the Team had to introduce themselves to the whole
congregation, which was a daunting task. After the service, we met our buddies,
all of whom where very friendly and eager to get started on getting to know us.
They took us down to the school where we spent the afternoon learning African
dancing, singing and drumming. After learning the African songs, we taught our
buddies the Hokey Cokey and Macerena. Then we walked to the orphanage and spent
the rest of the afternoon being welcomed by more singing and dancing, did some
crafty things with the children like painting faces and making masks, and played
“What’s the time Mister Wolf?” which proved popular among the younger kids. Then
it was back to the Enro Hotel for a well earned rest and game of pool.

Saturday 17th October
We awoke in the morning to the sounds of Africa, the wildlife made a lot of
noise. We had breakfast at the hotel where we were staying before heading off to
Kampala, the capital of Uganda. We drove through the edge of the slums to get
there, and it was amazing how on the same road one side would be slums and yet
the other would be wealthy, like two separate worlds so close. We went to the
bank first and left collectively as millionaires. Then we went to the post
office to send some postcards to our families. I don’t think they’ve heard of
traffic wardens or speed cameras there, but the walk was easy enough. After this
we had to go off to a craft fair to haggle for some gifts for our families, but
I felt slightly guilty for haggling when it was so cheap anyway. We then went to
a restaurant called the guest house for lunch, with a view over the city and
watched as the birds flew around the trees. However after that the comfort
ended, we had to drive on some fairly bumpy roads to Mityana, made even worse if
you were trying to get to sleep. Eventually we arrived at the Hotel Enro where
we were staying and were pleasantly surprised. We played pool and had dinner
before unpacking our second suitcases and divided them all up to go to the
different schools and the hospital, as well as other places. It was quite a
varied day.
