Making A Difference - Water

Water is the biggest issue in Uganda. Despite the fact that Uganda is on the Equator and has substantial rainfall, every family, almost without exception, has to collect water from a pump, river or well. It is mostly collected in 20 litre jerry cans.

Often it is unclean & is collected from muddy pools like this one.

On their first day our Testbourne 2007 team went with the Mityana Secondary students to collect water.

The walk down to the waterhole went on and on and the girls had to stand on a beam across the water hole and shove their 20 litre jerry can under the water horizontally. Then we had to walk back up the slope. It felt really good when you got to the top. It really hits home how hard it is after you’ve tried it yourself.’

In 2006 we sent out money for three 10,000 litre tanks, having seen that they are safely installed we are planning to send money for five more. Each tank, with guttering, concrete base and brick surround costs £1220. Clean, safe water can then be ‘harvested’ off the roof. When piped water comes to Mityana town the tanks can be used as ‘holding tanks’ and when the rains come can be filled to capacity.

In the UK we have no idea what it means to be without running water. Providing a tank for a community, church and school is a really wonderful thing for us to do.
