Group Fund Total So Far:
| Visit Report 2007 A key part of the 2007 project was Testbourne School linking up with the Mityana Secondary School. A tree has been planted – symbolic of the ongoing and growing partnership. Felix and Michael were chosen as ‘buddies’. They learned much about each other’s way of life and schooling. It was a time when both learnt about another culture.
During the school week we sat in on lessons. ‘There were so different, as there weren’t any text books or resources, so it was just the teacher dictating facts to the class. The class sizes were also different, often being at least 60 pupils in a small classroom, so not everyone had a seat. They really treasure their education as they know it’s their only way out of poverty’.
The team painted all the school blackboards one Sunday afternoon. The Orphanage "For me, visiting the Orphanage, one of the best parts of the trip because it really opened my eyes and allowed me to see first hand how they live and how they get by. Also it highlighted how materialistic our lives are and how we don’t really need half the stuff we have" (Testbourne 2007) The Orphanage provides accommodation and schooling for over 300 children. In one of the girls’ dormitory there were 14 bunk beds. We later found out all the girls had to share a bed. The calculation silenced us! Whilst there, some of the dormitories were painted, we visited classes, played games with the children and provided money for food.
